A Game About Opening A Chest Turns Loot Greed Into an Incremental Roguelike
First-time developer Odd Raccoon and publisher 2 Left Thumbs have launched A Game About Opening A Chest on Steam today. It is exactly what the title promises... and also an incremental roguelike built around procedural loot, escalating multipliers, and the eternal urge to open one more chest.
The game mixes game mechanics of powerscaling, roguelikes, and inventory management. You open chests, collect legendary gear, stack synergies, grow your fortune, and more. The core loop is pretty straightforward. Open a chest, receive procedural loot, then combine items by Type and Class to create increasingly absurd multipliers.
In this game, you are chasing the perfect combination of items, NPC bonuses, and risk management that lets your numbers spiral out of control.
A Game About Opening A Chest is split into three distinct levels, with their own mechanics and a rising gold requirement. The first, Chest Dungeon, is about finding the best loot combo and maximizing gold earnings.
Astral Void asks players to manage a growing Madness meter before it consumes them, while King’s Hall shifts the focus to upgrading, socketing, and tempering loot for even bigger bonuses. This structure is smart for an incremental game, giving each stage a new problem to solve rather than simply asking for bigger numbers.
Loot is only part of the equation. Players can manipulate dungeon NPCs for strategic bonuses while also protecting their gold and loot supplies from threats such as goblins, dragons, and other dungeon hazards.

That degree of risk keeps the game from becoming a pure clicker. Every chest could contain a legendary item, but pushing deeper also means bigger threats that can cost you.
The game is out now for $9.65 CAD, or $7.99 USD, with a 20% launch discount bringing it to $7.72 CAD or $6.39 USD. It supports English, French, German, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.
A free public demo is now available, letting players try the complete first level before committing to the full thing. For fans of this genre, it's easy to add to the wishlist... or open immediately.
