One of the most important studios in Canadian gaming history is closing its doors.

BioWare confirmed on October 21, 2026, that it is shutting down after more than three decades of creating influential role-playing games. Development on the next *Mass Effect* project is also ending.

For Canadian gaming, this is a significant loss. BioWare helped establish Canada’s reputation for ambitious game development, creating characters and worlds that became deeply personal to generations of players.

**EA Confirms BioWare’s Closure**

In an announcement shared with employees and published on its website, Electronic Arts confirmed that it would close BioWare and its Edmonton workspace.

EA said a small team had been working on the next *Mass Effect* game in early development. The publisher has decided not to continue that project as it concentrates resources on fewer simultaneous, large-scale action-adventure games.

The company acknowledged BioWare’s importance to the role-playing genre and said it would help affected employees explore other opportunities within EA.

BioWare also shared a farewell message reflecting on its history and the communities surrounding its games. The studio said its immediate priority was supporting its team through the transition.

**The Next Mass Effect Will Not Move Forward**

The closure also ends development on the next *Mass Effect*, which was announced in 2020.

For fans who had spent years anticipating another journey through that universe, the cancellation is a painful part of the news. The project remained in early development with a small team, and EA has now confirmed that work will not continue.

That decision concerns the project BioWare was developing. It should not be read as confirmation that the *Mass Effect* franchise can never return, although the announcement provides no replacement plan.

**A Major Loss for Canadian Gaming**

Founded in 1995, BioWare built an international reputation through games including *Baldur’s Gate*, *Neverwinter Nights*, *Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic*, *Mass Effect*, and *Dragon Age*. EA acquired the studio in 2007\.

Its importance to Canadian gaming extends beyond that catalogue. BioWare demonstrated the reach of Canadian creative talent, bringing ambitious role-playing experiences to audiences around the world.

For many players, *Baldur’s Gate* became a defining computer RPG. *Knights of the Old Republic* offered a memorable opportunity to shape a character’s place in the Star Wars universe. *Dragon Age* invited players into a fantasy world filled with political tensions, difficult loyalties, and companions worth getting to know.

Then there was *Mass Effect*. Commander Shepard’s journey combined galactic stakes with personal relationships, making conversations aboard the Normandy feel as important as the battles outside it.

Across those games, BioWare gave players reasons to care about both the worlds they explored and the people who inhabited them.

**A Legacy Built on Choices and Companions**

BioWare’s lasting influence is closely tied to the way its games encouraged emotional investment.

Players chose sides, argued with companions, formed relationships, and made decisions whose consequences could follow them through a story. The experience often continued beyond the credits, through debates with friends about what they had done differently and why.

Those conversations became part of the games’ identities. A favourite companion, a difficult sacrifice, or a decision made many hours earlier could shape how someone remembered an entire playthrough.

BioWare acknowledged that connection in its farewell, thanking players for engaging with its characters and making its worlds their own.

The studio’s legacy belongs to the developers who created those experiences and the communities that continue discussing them.

**The Closure Comes Amid Wider Changes at EA**

BioWare’s closure follows a difficult period for the studio, including the disappointing reception to *Mass Effect: Andromeda*, the struggles of *Anthem*, and staff reductions after *Dragon Age: The Veilguard* missed EA’s sales expectations.

The decision also comes after EA’s approximately US$55 billion acquisition, which took the publisher private. VGC reports that the transaction was completed in August 2026\.

That ownership change is relevant context, but it does not establish a single cause for BioWare’s closure. EA’s published explanation emphasizes its decision to focus resources on fewer major projects; it does not directly attribute the closure to debt repayment.

**A Gaming Network Thanks BioWare**

For us at A Gaming Network, this is especially sad news.

BioWare helped show what Canadian game developers could accomplish on a global stage. Its teams built worlds that players returned to for years, created companions who felt like old friends, and inspired conversations that outlasted the games themselves.

Behind every memorable quest, performance, environment, and character were people whose work made those experiences possible. As fans reflect on their favourite games, the developers affected by this closure deserve to remain central to the conversation.

To everyone who contributed to BioWare over the last three decades, thank you for the stories, the characters, and the choices we spent hours debating. Thank you for helping shape Canadian game development and the wider role-playing genre.

We wish everyone affected the very best in what comes next.

BioWare’s closure ends an important chapter in Canadian gaming. The work its people created will remain part of gaming’s history, and part of the lives of the players who experienced it.
