over the hill Takes Funselektor’s Chill Driving Style Off-Road

Funselektor, the Vancouver studio behind art of rally, has launched over the hill on Steam today. The 1-4 player off-road exploration game arrives with 1.5 million Steam wishlists, a 20% launch discount, and a clear message: there is no rush to get anywhere.

over the hill is about loading up a vintage 4x4, heading into the wilderness, and seeing where the trail takes you. It is a gentler, more exploratory take on off-road driving than something like SnowRunner, though the terrain can still punish careless drivers.

Players choose vehicles inspired by 1960s through 1980s off-roaders and explore an interconnected wilderness inspired by real-world locations. Forests, lakesides, and mountains hide remote cabins, scenic viewpoints, natural landmarks, meteorites, and portals to new areas.

The journey is shaped by dynamic weather and day/night cycles, which can change both the environment and how difficult a route becomes. You can play solo or bring up to three friends into online co-op, working together with planks, winches, and other equipment to get unstuck.

There is a light progression loop beyond simply reaching the next trailhead. Players can find upgrades in the world, customize their vehicles with colours, accessories, and cosmetics, and use an in-game camera to photograph wildlife or fill out a compendium. over the hill seems designed for players who want to stop at a viewpoint, take in the landscape, and turn a messy mud-caked expedition into a screenshot-worthy memory.

Founder and creative director Dune Casu described the game as "an extension of his own nomadic lifestyle", built around camping in remote places, slowing down, and setting off again without a strict plan. That patient, meandering feeling is central to the experience.

With 1.5 million wishlists and more than 500,000 players trying the demo earlier this year, over the hill enters release as one of 2026’s most anticipated indie games.
