Project Windless PS5: Everything We Know About the New Open World Action RPG

Krafton Montréal Studio just pulled back the curtain on Project Windless, and it looks like we are getting a high-budget, open-world epic that is doing things a bit differently.

If you aren't familiar with the source material, this game is set in the universe of the acclaimed Korean fantasy series The Bird That Drinks Tears. But instead of a direct retelling, the developers are taking us back over a thousand years before the books even began.

Project Windless drops you into a "forgotten age" where the land is fractured and tensions are at a breaking point. You aren't just a random adventurer. You are a mythical figure whose choices will literally spark the birth of a new kingdom.

The most refreshing part? Krafton is promising a true "no hand-holding" experience. They want the world to feel like yours, not theirs. You won't be following a dotted line on a mini-map for 40 hours. Instead, the game encourages you to get lost, take risks, and decide for yourself whether you want to be a diplomat or a warlord.

Playing as a Rekon: The Ultimate Power Trip

One of the coolest reveals is the protagonist. You’ll be playing as a Rekon, a nomadic race of giant, humanoid bird warriors.

These guys are absolute powerhouses, but they aren't invincible. The devs highlighted some fascinating traits that will likely impact how we play:

  • Immense Scale: Their size and reach make them perfect for "one-versus-many" combat.
  • A Strange Weakness: Despite their strength, Rekons have a legendary, deep-seated fear of water.
  • Solitary Nature: They are complex, private beings with strong personal beliefs, which should make for some great character moments.

Mass Technology: Real Chaos, Not Just Visuals

We have all seen games that show "armies" in the background that don't actually do anything. Project Windless is trying to fix that. Using what they call "innovative mass technology," the game features crowds of dozens or even hundreds of enemies that actually participate in the fight.

These enemies won't just stand there waiting for their turn to get hit. They move, flank, and surround you. Every battle is designed to be a "living spectacle" where you have to constantly adapt to the raw chaos of the battlefield. Whether you are slicing through a swarm of soldiers or taking down a giant creature, the scale looks massive.

Platforms and Hardware

The game is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. While we don't have a firm release date yet, the fact that they are specifically targeting the Pro suggests we can expect some seriously impressive performance and high-fidelity visuals when it finally lands.
