The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park Launches With New Story, Companions, and Gear

Ubisoft has officially released The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park, bringing players back to New York City for a darker chapter in the tactical looter-shooter.

Available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the new DLC introduces the Upper West Side and Central Park as explorable locations for the first time in the franchise.

Developed by Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Bucharest, Echoes of Central Park is the largest expansion for The Division 2 since Warlords of New York, featuring a new narrative, three companions, six skill variants, additional gear, and a replayable endgame experience.

A Darker Story Inspired by Horror

Echoes of Central Park takes a different approach to storytelling, drawing inspiration from the horror genre rather than focusing entirely on the familiar military conflicts of The Division.

Residents of New York City's Upper West Side are living in fear as people begin disappearing or turning up dead under disturbing circumstances. Rumours of a new virus variant are spreading, and many believe something dangerous is hiding inside Central Park.

Players are sent to investigate these events, uncover the truth, and rescue a mysterious target.

The story is presented through flashbacks, with a narrator sharing her version of what happened. That storytelling approach makes uncertainty an important part of the experience, as players must separate rumours from reality.

Explore Central Park for the First Time

One of the expansion's biggest additions is the opportunity to explore New York City's Upper West Side and Central Park.

Players begin their investigation in the Upper West Side, travelling through locations inspired by real New York landmarks, including the American Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Square, and the Dakota District.

Eventually, the story leads into Central Park itself.

Once an iconic landmark, the park has become a dangerous location filled with decay and unanswered questions. During the initial outbreak, it served as a mass burial ground. Now, a powerful new threat has reportedly taken control of the area.

Set during the summer following Warlords of New York, the DLC expands the franchise's version of Manhattan with a more unsettling atmosphere.

Three New Companions Join the Fight

For the first time in this expansion, players can recruit one of three companions to help them survive the dangers of Central Park.

Each character has a different background, fighting style, and understanding of the events unfolding around the park.

Brayleigh Callahan is a sniper, an MIT graduate, and an Olympic shooting medallist. Her abilities focus on supporting players through long-range combat.

Elwood Franklin is a protector who previously worked as a mall security officer and hopes to become an NYPD officer. His role focuses on defensive support.

Morse Feeney is an assault specialist and former first-wave Division agent with a mysterious past. His experience makes him a valuable ally in direct combat.

Players must earn each companion's trust before recruiting them. Only one companion can join the player at a time, but switching between them during mission replays can change both the tactical experience and the dialogue.

Each companion offers different combat advantages, encouraging players to experiment with their approach.

A Replayable Endgame Where Every Encounter Matters

Echoes of Central Park introduces an endgame experience designed to make repeated visits to the park feel different.

During the first playthrough, players will face significant challenges as they navigate Central Park without GPS assistance while dealing with relentless enemy encounters.

As the story progresses, players gain knowledge about the threats they face and collect equipment that can improve their chances of survival.

Performance also matters.

Successful encounters can reward players with advantages that help them later, while poor performance can create additional obstacles.

Combined with the unique combat benefits provided by companions, the system is designed to make each run feel different.

It also creates a progression from surviving the dangers of Central Park to becoming better equipped to confront them.

Six New Skill Variants and Additional Gear

The expansion also expands the player's arsenal with six new skill variants inspired by the threats encountered throughout Central Park.

Two confirmed examples include the Corrosive Trap and Gas Bomber.

Players can also unlock the Ratel, a new Exotic weapon, alongside an additional Gear Set.

At launch, Prototype Gear will have its effectiveness normalized within the DLC to maintain the intended challenge.

Ubisoft plans to restore Prototype Gear's full strength in Echoes of Central Park through a future update.

This approach is intended to ensure players experience the expansion's survival-focused gameplay before bringing their most powerful equipment to its full potential.

Play Solo or With Friends

Like the main game, Echoes of Central Park supports both solo and cooperative play.

Players who have not yet reached Level 40 will receive a temporary level boost, allowing them to begin the expansion without having to complete the entire progression journey beforehand.

That makes the DLC more accessible to returning players or newcomers who want to experience the new storyline immediately.

A Different Direction for The Division 2

What makes Echoes of Central Park interesting is how Ubisoft is experimenting with the atmosphere and structure of The Division 2.

The franchise has traditionally focused on tactical combat, rebuilding society, and fighting hostile factions following a devastating outbreak.

This time, the developers are placing greater emphasis on paranoia, uncertainty, and fear.

The flashback storytelling, mysterious threat, limited navigation assistance, and companion system all contribute to an experience that appears intended to feel different from previous expansions.

It is still The Division 2, with familiar tactical combat and loot progression, but the surrounding experience is taking inspiration from survival horror.

Where to Play The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park

The expansion launched on November 3, 2026, and is available for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC through Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store
  • Ubisoft+ subscribers

A Deluxe Edition is also available, featuring outfits inspired by the three new companions and a cosmetic skin for the Ratel Exotic weapon.

Final Thoughts

The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park looks to be one of the franchise's more ambitious expansions in recent years.

Exploring Central Park for the first time is already an exciting prospect, but the shift toward horror-inspired storytelling makes this DLC especially interesting.

The addition of three companions also gives players a new way to approach combat, while the replayable endgame and performance-based consequences should provide reasons to return after completing the story.

For longtime Division players, Echoes of Central Park offers a familiar world from an unfamiliar perspective.

For returning players, it may be a good reason to pick up their gear and head back to New York City.
