The Outlast Trials Season 7 Adds Prison Farm, a New Ex-Pop, and a Fresh Dose of Murkoff Nightmare Fuel
TLDR: The Outlast Trials is heading back into the kind of nightmare that only Murkoff could dream up. Season 7, titled Project Boneyard, launches July 14 and brings with it a new Trial environment called Prison Farm, a new Ex-Pop enemy named The Biter, two new MK-Challenges, and major updates to Escalation and Invasion.
At the center of the season is Sergeant Leland Coyle, who returns in a bigger role to help enforce order in Sinyala Facility’s latest correctional disaster. The new Trial, Locksock the Warden, leans hard into The Outlast Trials’ usual blend of punishment, control, and grotesque institutional horror, with the press release framing the whole thing around authority, profit, and the illusion of freedom
Prison Farm sounds like exactly the kind of setting this series thrives on. It's being described as a "brutal American prison environment where violence, contraband, and close quarters create a pressure cooker of power dynamics." In other words, this map is a fresh excuse to make players feel trapped, watched, and deeply uneasy.
The season also adds two new MK-Challenges, Bribe the Judges and Cancel the Broadcast, both of which keep the game’s satirical, self-serious horror tone intact. One leans into corruption and bribery, while the other is about sabotaging a broadcast with blood and chaos. That is pretty on-brand for a game that likes its social commentary wrapped in absolute misery.

Then there is The Biter, the new Ex-Pop enemy stalking Prison Farm. According to the latest press release, these enemies have had their arms removed, but they can still inflict serious damage thanks to mechanically driven jaws and surprisingly fast movement. Which, honestly, is a sentence that tells you everything you need to know about The Outlast Trials’ relationship with horror: if it can be made more disturbing, it probably will be.
Beyond the new Trial content, Project Boneyard is also bringing some meaningful quality-of-life additions. Season 7 introduces Rig Customization, Knife Customization, Loadout Presets, and Mastery Tasks, all of which should give players more flexibility before stepping into the madness. That feels like a smart move for a game that already asks a lot of its players and benefits from better prep and personalization.

Red Barrels is also making notable changes to Escalation and Invasion, with both modes receiving major reworks to improve flow and structure. The dev team has not yet spelt everything out, but the fact that these systems are being revisited suggests Season 7 is trying to be more than just a content drop. It sounds like a meaningful tune-up for the game as a whole.
Project Boneyard is more The Outlast Trials in the best possible way: nastier, stranger, and more committed to turning institutional dread into playable horror. And with Prison Farm, The Biter, and Coyle back in the mix, Season 7 looks ready to make life in Sinyala Facility even worse for everyone involved.
