PlayStation State of Play September 2026 Recap: Final Fantasy VII, Wolverine, Until Dawn 2, and More

Sony’s September 2026 State of Play delivered a packed showcase for PlayStation fans, bringing together major PS5 updates, new release dates, DLC reveals, surprise announcements, PlayStation Plus additions, and a full State of Play Japan presentation.

The show had a strong mix of first-party updates, third-party blockbusters, Japanese RPGs, horror games, expansions, indie reveals, and collectibles. The biggest headline came from Square Enix, with Final Fantasy VII Revelation officially dated for April 8, 2027, closing out the remake trilogy. PlayStation also confirmed Until Dawn 2 for January 28, 2027, revealed limited-edition Grand Theft Auto VI DualSense controllers, showed one final launch trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, and gave fans a proper look at new Ghost of Yōtei content.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Ends the Trilogy in April 2027

The biggest moment of the show belonged to Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

Square Enix confirmed that the third and final entry in its Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy will launch on April 8, 2027 for PlayStation 5. The game received an extended gameplay deep dive, showing off a much larger world, aerial exploration with the Highwind, grappling traversal, chocobo movement, new combat systems, and more cinematic story moments.

For longtime Final Fantasy fans, this is a massive date. After years of speculation, the end of the remake trilogy finally has a launch window, and PlayStation used the showcase to make it feel like a major 2027 event.

Until Dawn 2 Launches January 28, 2027

Until Dawn 2 also received a major update, with PlayStation confirming a January 28, 2027 release date.

Developed by Firesprite, the sequel brings back the choice-driven horror structure that made the original so memorable, but this time with a new cast, new threats, and new locations. The trailer showed the Dead True crew dealing with supernatural danger, including a return to Blackwood Sanatorium and a trip to Akishima Island.

The big appeal remains the same: every decision matters, and players will have to live with the consequences.

GTA 6 Limited Edition PS5 Controllers Revealed

PlayStation also revealed two Grand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense Wireless Controllers.

The controllers will come in black and white versions inspired by GTA VI’s Vice City energy. Both launch on November 19, with pre-orders opening September 10.

With GTA VI also launching on PS5 on November 19, these controllers are clearly positioned as major collector’s items for one of the biggest game releases of the year.

Marvel’s Wolverine Gets One Last Trailer Before Launch

Insomniac Games returned with a final trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine ahead of its September 15, 2026 launch on PS5.

The new footage leaned into Logan’s violent combat, emotional conflicts, and mutant-heavy supporting cast. Players got another look at Jean Grey, Team X, and major threats tied to Bolivar Trask and his mutant-hunting program.

At this point, Marvel’s Wolverine looks like one of PlayStation’s biggest 2026 exclusives, and this final trailer was clearly designed to build the last wave of excitement before release.

Ghost of Yōtei Expands With Most Wanted and Echoes of Sekigahara

Ghost of Yōtei had a strong showing with new details on its upcoming Complete Edition content.

The biggest addition is Most Wanted, a new combat survival mode launching October 1 as part of the Complete Edition. Players will fight waves of enemies, face challenging boss encounters, and unlock rewards such as weapons, cosmetics, and playable characters.

One of the biggest fan-service reveals is the return of Jin Sakai as a playable character in Most Wanted.

State of Play Japan also showed more of Echoes of Sekigahara, a story expansion exploring Atsu’s past and her connection to the Battle of Sekigahara. For Ghost fans, this looks like a substantial update that adds both replayable combat and deeper story content.

Saros Gets Free Zenith Update

Saros is getting a free Zenith Update later this year.

The update adds Overlord Rush, a boss rush mode where players battle campaign bosses back to back while competing with others around the world. It also includes Eclipse Layers, a New Game Plus mode with new modifiers, progression options, and secrets.

Accessibility is also being expanded, including a slow game speed option. For players who already enjoyed Saros, this update looks like a strong reason to return.

PlayStation Plus Adds More Games for Extra and Premium Members

Sony also revealed new PlayStation Plus additions.

Mycopunk, a 1-4 player co-op looter shooter, is coming to the Game Catalog later this year. Players control ramshackle robots sent to clean up a fungus-infected planet, taking down mechanical monstrosities and building new weapons.

PlayStation Plus Premium is also getting several classics, including:

• Mega Man X: Command Mission
• Dino Crisis 2
• Ratchet & Clank

For retro fans, Dino Crisis 2 and Ratchet & Clank are especially strong additions.

LEGO PlayStation Set Announced

One of the most unexpected announcements was the reveal of an official LEGO PlayStation set.

The 1,911-piece set recreates the original PlayStation console and controller at nearly 1:1 scale. It launches on October 1 and includes hidden details celebrating PlayStation history.

This is not a game announcement, but it was easily one of the most nostalgic reveals of the showcase.

Konami Reveals Rhapsody in Scarlet

Konami surprised players with Rhapsody in Scarlet, a new action-adventure game set in 1920s New York.

The game combines jazz, magic, stylish combat, and supernatural beasts. Players follow Magus Ellie Myers as she becomes caught in a mystery involving a shadowy mafia organization.

The State of Play Japan segment also featured producer Takanori Murayama discussing the game’s combat, custom combos, magic systems, and beast abilities. This was one of the more stylish new reveals of the show.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Revealed

Capcom revealed Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a massive expansion coming to PS5 in 2027.

The expansion adds new monsters, a new locale, new story content, evolved hunting mechanics, and a new threat connected to the Forbidden Lands. Capcom also showed the Skybound Eyrie area, the new Boost Action, and newly revealed monsters, including Gundoraja.

Players will be able to try the expansion at Tokyo Game Show 2026 with a playable hunt against Arakeeta.

Rev. Noir Returns for PS5 in 2027

Konami also showed more of Rev. Noir, which is coming to PS5 in 2027.

The RPG follows Asch and Finé as they try to prevent a catastrophe known as the Lightfall. The new trailer offered more gameplay and story footage, helping define the tone of the game after its earlier reveal.

The unusual capitalization may stand out, but the game itself looks like another intriguing RPG from Konami’s upcoming slate.

Maneater 2 Comes to PS5 in 2027

Tripwire Interactive revealed Maneater 2, bringing the shark RPG back to PlayStation 5 in 2027.

This time, players control a deadly bull shark trapped inside an ultra-luxury private island theme park called Neptune’s Kingdom. The game promises more eating, evolving, underwater chaos, and bioengineered predators standing between players and freedom.

The first Maneater became a cult favourite because of how ridiculous and fun its shark power fantasy was. Maneater 2 looks ready to embrace that same energy.

Uncanyon Brings New Puzzle Adventure From the Makers of Maquette

Graceful Decay, the studio behind Maquette, revealed Uncanyon, a new puzzle-first adventure coming to PS5 in 2027.

The game is built around shifting realities, memory, scale, and strange convergences between parallel worlds. Players will blend realities together, explore the results, and solve puzzles in trap-filled ruins.

For players who enjoyed Maquette’s reality-bending puzzle design, Uncanyon looks like a natural next step.

Keeper Comes to PS5

Double Fine Productions is bringing Keeper to PS5.

The surreal third-person puzzle adventure tells a story without words, following a forgotten lighthouse and a spirited seabird on a strange journey across a mysterious island.

Keeper launched on PS5 during the showcase, making it one of the rare “available now” moments from the presentation.

Crimson Desert Gets Charting the Unknown Expansion

Pearl Abyss revealed Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, a large expansion launching on the PlayStation Store on October 15.

The trailer, captured on PS5 Pro, showed more of the game’s action-adventure gameplay and followed Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane as they set out on a new journey.

For players who have already been exploring Crimson Desert, Charting the Unknown looks like a sizable expansion with more story and world content.

Hunter’s Moon Brings Historical Folk Horror to PS5

Hunter’s Moon is a first-person historical folk horror game coming to PS5 on October 25.

Inspired by the history of English witch hunts, the game takes place over one night in a 17th-century rural village. Players embody an accused woman trying to survive under the light of the full moon, eavesdropping on villagers, avoiding detection, and escaping witch hunters.

This looks like one of the more atmospheric horror games shown during the presentation.

Metro 2039 Launches February 4, 2027

4A Games revealed PS5 Pro gameplay for Metro 2039, which launches on February 4, 2027.

The game follows a mysterious character known as the Stranger through post-apocalyptic Moscow. As expected from the Metro series, the game combines exploration, stealth, combat, survival, and an oppressive atmosphere.

For fans of single-player survival shooters, Metro 2039 looks like one of early 2027’s bigger releases.

Gran Turismo 7 Gets Spec IV Update

Gran Turismo 7 is receiving a two-part Spec IV update later this year.

The update will roll out across October and December 2026 and includes two new circuits, 12 cars, new modes, and more. Additions include Online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races, and a new Family Mode built to welcome players with different levels of driving experience.

As Gran Turismo approaches its 30th anniversary, Spec IV looks like a strong support update for one of PlayStation’s longest-running franchises.

Daba: Land of Water Scar Gets Sony Publishing Support

Daba: Land of Water Scar is coming to PS5 in Spring 2027.

Developed by Dark Star Games as part of PlayStation’s China Hero Project, the action RPG follows a clayman journeying through a land where the waters have run dry.

The game continues to look visually striking, and Sony publishing support should help it reach a wider audience.

Fate/Extra Record Finally Gets a Date

After years of waiting, Fate/Extra Record is launching on January 28, 2027 for PS5 and PS4.

The remake expands the Moon Holy Grail War with updated visuals and a revamped deck-building Command Card battle system. For anime RPG fans, this is one of the more notable State of Play Japan announcements.

Final Fantasy Resonance Demo Available Now

Square Enix also revealed that Final Fantasy Resonance now has a free playable demo on PS5.

The demo includes the full first chapter, and save data will carry over to the full game when it launches on October 22. The trailer also revealed that Sephiroth will appear as a powerful challenge encounter, with players able to unlock a special reward by defeating him.

For players curious about this HD-2D Final Fantasy project, the demo gives them a strong chance to try it before buying.

Gundam Rogue Orbit Launches March 5, 2027

Gundam Rogue Orbit received a new trailer and a confirmed March 5, 2027 release date.

The game focuses on fast-paced Gundam combat, deep customization, new weapon types, Tactical Skills, and different mobile suit parts that can change how your Gundam moves and fights.

Players can also customize unit colours or equip a MOD Skin inspired by the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam.

Resident Evil Movie Opens the Show

Sony opened the showcase with a look at the new Resident Evil movie from Zach Cregger.

The film comes to cinemas on September 18 and follows medical courier Bryan as he attempts to make a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital while a viral outbreak begins taking over the city.

It set a horror-heavy mood for the showcase, especially with Until Dawn 2, Hunter’s Moon, Metro 2039, and other darker titles appearing later.

CONQ: Crown of No Quarter Revealed

CONQ: Crown of No Quarter was revealed with its first trailer.

The game introduces a large-scale warfare experience set in a shared open world, where players can lead armies across land and sea, build siege engines, storm enemy strongholds, and fight for their faction.

It was one of the more easy-to-miss reveals, but the scale makes it worth watching.

Stupid Never Dies Gets PS5 Demo

Stupid Never Dies now has a PS5 demo, letting players try the opening hours of the game.

Progress from the demo carries over to the full game when it launches on October 21. The trailer showed more of its over-the-top zombie action, including the ability to steal powers from powerful monsters.

The Eminence in Shadow Gets Console Roguelite

The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes was revealed for PS5 and is coming in 2027.

It is the first console game based on the series and features roguelite action focused on the Seven Shadows. The story is being supervised by series author Daisuke Aizawa, which should make it more appealing to fans of the anime and light novel.

SlashZero Demo Available Now

SlashZero received a new trailer, and a time-limited demo is available now on PS5.

The demo includes three playable characters, boss battles, and more than 10 hours of content. The full game is a side-scrolling action roguelike planned for Spring 2027.

World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA Revealed

A Seoul-based studio revealed World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA, a new action RPG coming to PS5 in 2028.

Set in Seoul, players become a Containment Agent entering containment zones to confront strange supernatural phenomena. It looks like one of the most mysterious long-term reveals from State of Play Japan.

The State of Play Japan portion also included several RPG and anime game announcements, including:

• Digimon Story Time Stranger: A Hero’s Eternal Legacy, a 2027 expansion with a new protagonist, partner, and around 50 new Digimon
• Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, coming to PS5 in 2027
• Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, launching December 3 on PS5
• Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online: Genesis Maidens, coming this winter
• Where the Seeds Fall, launching November 5, 2026
• Rematch x Blue Lock, launching September 24 on PS5

This gave the second half of the showcase a strong anime, RPG, and Asian studio focus.

Final Thoughts

Sony’s September 2026 State of Play was one of its busiest showcases of the year.

The biggest headline is clearly Final Fantasy VII Revelation finally getting its April 8, 2027 release date. That alone would have made the presentation important, but Sony stacked the showcase with much more: Until Dawn 2, Marvel’s Wolverine, GTA VI controllers, Ghost of Yōtei content, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Metro 2039, Maneater 2, Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV, Final Fantasy Resonance, and a wave of RPGs and horror games from State of Play Japan.

The show also had a good mix of games arriving soon and titles planned for 2027 and beyond. Wolverine is almost here. Ghost of Yōtei’s new content and Crimson Desert’s expansion arrive in October. GTA VI controllers land in November. Then early 2027 brings Until Dawn 2, Fate/Extra Record, Metro 2039, Gundam Rogue Orbit, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

For PlayStation fans, the message was simple: the PS5 calendar is not slowing down.
