Skirmish: Ascension Headlines VALORANT Act 3 as Kuronami Collection Expands
Skirmish is back, but Riot is clearly done just recycling the same formula. Yesterday, Riot Games officially unveiled Skirmish: Ascension as part of VALORANT Season 2026 Act 3, positioning it as the next evolution of the mode and a direct response to players asking for a more competitive experience.
At its core, Ascension is a more deliberate, skill-focused take on Skirmish. It features a curated Agent pool where each character is limited to a single ability, carefully selected to test game sense and real-time decision-making rather than full-kit reliance. The result is a mode that shifts the emphasis away from utility overload and toward mechanics, timing, and smart reads in the moment.
That philosophy extends to the weapon structure as well. Matches progress through staged loadouts, starting with pistol rounds using the Bandit and Sheriff, moving into Guardian and Bulldog, and eventually settling into Vandal and Phantom for the bulk of play. It creates a more controlled, fundamentals-first environment that feels closer to a pure competitive sandbox.

One of the biggest additions is the introduction of 1v1 alongside the existing 2v2 format. Both queues come with separate leaderboards, giving players the option to either rely on tight coordination or test themselves entirely on their own. It is easily the most direct measure of individual performance Skirmish has offered so far.
To support that competitive push, Riot is also introducing a ranked ladder through the For The Win (FTW) platform. Players can connect their accounts, climb from Iron to Radiant, and earn rewards based on both participation and rank, adding meaningful stakes to what is otherwise an experimental mode.
Alongside Skirmish: Ascension, Act 3 also brings back one of VALORANT’s most recognizable skin lines. The Kuronami Collection returns as a direct continuation of its January 2024 debut, expanding the lineup with the Phantom, Operator, Ghost, and Guardian, as well as a new transforming Kunai melee. It builds on the same sleek, high-contrast aesthetic while pushing further into premium animation and design.
The new Act is rounded out with a fresh Battlepass, featuring items like the Keys to Elysium Vandal, Insidious Phantom, and Boss Bear Spray, giving players even more to grind for when the season goes live.
Skirmish: Ascension will run from April 29 through June 22 with a staggered regional rollout, launching alongside VALORANT Season 2026 Act 3. Between the more focused competitive format and the return of Kuronami, this update feels like Riot testing both ends of the experience, refining gameplay while continuing to invest in the game’s visual identity.
