Tears of Metal Brings Hack-and-Slash Roguelike Action to Steam and Game Pass
Montreal indie studio Paper Cult is back with a new project, and it’s already swinging hard. The developer behind Bloodroots has officially launched Tears of Metal into Early "Axe"ess, bringing medieval hack-and-slash roguelike to Steam and PC Game Pass.

Set on a war-torn island overrun by mysterious invaders, Tears of Metal emphasizes large-scale, horde-style combat with a distinctly co-op focus. You’re leading a growing Scottish battalion, recruiting and upgrading soldiers who persist between runs and become key to your long-term progress.
At launch, Early Access includes a full gameplay loop across three acts, each packed with unique enemy types, elite encounters, and boss fights. Players can choose from three heroes (with more on the way), each created to support various playstyles as you experiment with builds.
And builds are clearly a big deal here. The game features over 100 artifacts and a wide range of upgrades that can be combined into powerful, run-defining setups. Whether you’re stacking abilities for explosive frontline damage or building around survivability and squad synergy, there’s a strong emphasis on replayability and experimentation.

Between runs, you’ll return to your settlement, where progression continues. Expanding your village unlocks new upgrades, shops, and challenges, while also opening the door to new characters, cosmetics, and hidden secrets scattered across more than 45 handcrafted environments.
You can tackle all of this solo, but Tears of Metal is clearly built with co-op in mind, letting you and your friends charge into battle together and share inside the chaos.
The game is available now in Early Access on Steam currently for $26.99 CAD (10% off!), with a launch discount, and is also playable via PC Game Pass. An Xbox Series X|S release is planned for later this year, where it will also join Game Pass.
Tears of Metal feels like a confident next step for Paper Cult... bigger in scale, heavier on systems, and built to keep players coming back run after run.
